Departing from the southern tip of Baja, this offshore passage blends open-water sailing with some of mainland Mexico’s most rewarding coastal cruising. Weather depending, we may cross the Sea of Cortez toward Mazatlán or set a more direct course toward Isla Isabel, building miles, confidence, and real-world passagemaking experience along the way.
Highlights include Isla Isabel, affectionately called the “Galápagos of Mexico,” with dense bird colonies—including blue-footed boobies—frequent whale sightings, iguanas ashore, and a remarkably diverse marine ecosystem in the surrounding waters. From there, we continue to historic San Blas for an exceptional jungle exploration and visits to old Spanish ruins, then on to the relaxed village of Chacala before making our final approach into Banderas Bay.
We finish in La Cruz, a vibrant cruisers’ hub where sailors gather before Pacific crossings to the Marquesas, Hawaii, and the South Pacific—or while staging for passages south toward Panama—creating a unique atmosphere surrounded by like-minded offshore sailors.
This passage is designed for sailors ready to step into true expedition-style cruising: longer offshore legs, watch standing, navigation, and decision-making in changing conditions—balanced with time ashore to explore some of the most unique destinations on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
