It’s an incredibly rewarding way to live. The places are beautiful, the experiences are real, and the friendships formed along the way are unlike anything you find in everyday life.

But we’ve also seen what happens firsthand when people set out with the right intentions but without the experience needed to truly enjoy it. They end up learning the hard way—and it’s often a painful process to watch. In many cases, after enough challenges and setbacks, people walk away from cruising altogether, which is a shame.

Why We Exist

We started One World Sailing Academy after years of living aboard and cruising our Amel Super Maramu along the California coast and throughout Mexico. Over time, we came to love the cruising lifestyle—not just for the places it takes you, but for the experiences it offers along the way. Sailing offshore, standing watch under the stars, arriving in a quiet anchorage after a passage, exploring remote coastlines, and connecting with people living a similar life—these are the moments that define it.
Our goal is to bridge that gap. We work with people who dream of the cruising lifestyle and want to do it right the first time—to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to not just get by out there, but to truly thrive.
Our courses are not one-size-fits-all. Every student comes in with a different level of experience, different goals, and a different vision of what they want out of sailing. Instead of forcing a rigid curriculum, we tailor our instruction to the individual—building real-world skills across seamanship, navigation, weather, anchoring, boat systems, and offshore passagemaking.
We teach what we’ve lived. The goal is simple: when you set out on your own journey, you’re not just prepared—you’re confident, capable, and able to fully enjoy the lifestyle.

What they say about us

Training at One World Sailing Academy was an incredible experience. The instructors were patient, professional, and made every lesson enjoyable and safe.

Captain’s Story

My journey to becoming a sailor started when I was 10 years old, back in 1975. One of my mom’s friends owned a sailboat, and I was invited to go sailing. We left from King Harbor in Redondo Beach, California. I remember being excited and a little nervous heading out onto the ocean, but completely fascinated. The thing I remember most was the knot meter—a circular instrument near the companionway. As the boat picked up speed and the heel increased with the building wind, the numbers climbed. Five knots… then faster. For a 10-year-old, it felt absolutely incredible—like flying across the ocean under sail.
