Catalina Island Sailing

Catalina Island has been a major part of my life for more than 30 years.
I lived on Catalina Island back in 2003 and even owned a sailboat-based tour company there operating aboard a catamaran. I also spent many years running commercial ferry boats to Catalina Island as a licensed captain and conducted numerous private yacht charters to the island as well.

Over the decades, I have taught sailing around Catalina Island, learned to scuba dive there, hiked the entire Trans-Catalina Trail, and explored countless other trails and remote anchorages throughout the island. In fact, I have anchored or picked up moorings in virtually every cove around Catalina Island.

I also raised my children going back and forth to Catalina Island, and many of my closest lifelong friendships were formed there. Some of the best memories of my life have happened on Catalina Island alongside family, friends, loved ones, students, and fellow sailors.

For anyone interested in Catalina Island Sailing or Sailing Catalina, it is difficult to fully explain how special this island really is until you experience it yourself.

Catalina Island is rugged, beautiful, wild, peaceful, and incredibly unique. The island offers world-class hiking, diving, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, wildlife, anchorages, and coastal exploration. There is a reason so many people fall in love with Catalina Island and continue returning year after year.
Teaching people about Catalina Island and introducing them to this environment has genuinely been one of the greatest experiences of my life.
So, if you are interested in joining us at Catalina Island, you can do so on our fully immersive three-day, seven-day, and even ten-day liveaboard sailing courses conducted aboard a Category A ocean-rated blue water cruising sailboat, the Amel Super Maramu 2000.
Our Catalina Island liveaboard courses focus heavily on onboard systems that are commonly found aboard offshore cruising sailboats and vessels designed for long-distance sailing. We spend a tremendous amount of time covering anchoring techniques, including deeper water anchoring, bow and stern anchoring, anchoring strategy, roll stabilizers, onboard systems management, and many of the realities associated with offshore cruising.
We pack as much knowledge and hands-on experience into a Catalina Island trip as humanly possible.
I know for a fact that we go much deeper into these subjects than most traditional sailing schools because I personally taught many standard ASA 104-style Catalina Island classes for other schools over the years. At One World Sailing Academy, I have the freedom to teach these topics in far greater detail and in a much more immersive offshore-oriented environment.

I can also go much deeper into onboard systems training because we are teaching aboard a true offshore cruising vessel that actually has those systems installed and operating onboard. Many of the boats I previously taught on simply did not have the types of systems commonly found aboard serious long-distance cruising sailboats, which naturally limits how much students can realistically learn about them.
