Baja Sailing Courses

Every year, hundreds, if not thousands, of sailors depart from the West Coast of the United States and Canada and head south toward the warmer cruising environments of Mexico.

For sailors leaving from Southern California, this voyage represents the true beginning of offshore cruising, long-distance sailing, and a lifestyle centered around exploration and life at sea.

For anyone interested in Baja Sailing Courses, offshore passage making, or liveaboard sailing Baja, this route offers an incredible opportunity to experience real offshore cruising conditions while traveling through some of the most iconic cruising grounds on the West Coast of North America.

This voyage takes place along the outside of the Baja Peninsula on the Pacific side of Mexico. It is a route many experienced cruisers complete nonstop, often enjoying long stretches of comfortable downwind sailing.
Depending on weather, sea conditions, and vessel speed, it is entirely possible to sail directly to the tip of Baja in roughly six days, or even less, without making stops along the way.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with approaching the passage that way, especially for experienced cruisers who simply want to reach the Sea of Cortez or mainland Mexico more quickly.
At One World Sailing Academy, however, we like to break the trip up a little more. This allows us to rest and gives us many additional opportunities to teach throughout the voyage.
Our preferred approach is to conduct this voyage as a fully immersive ten-day liveaboard offshore sailing course. That gives us the opportunity to not only experience the offshore passage itself, but also explore many of the incredible locations found along the Baja Peninsula.
Possible stops may include places such as Cedros Island, Turtle Bay, Bahía Asunción, Scorpion Bay, and Magdalena Bay.
For students interested in surfing, Scorpion Bay is world famous for its long point break and incredible surf conditions. Magdalena Bay offers an enormous protected cruising area with beautiful anchorages, sand dunes, wildlife, and excellent opportunities for exploration.
Rather than simply rushing south nonstop, we enjoy taking the time to experience some of the incredible places found along Baja before eventually reaching the Cape region near Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
However, we are also completely open to conducting the voyage nonstop from Los Angeles all the way to San José del Cabo without making any stops at all if that is the preference of the individual, family, or small group onboard.
At One World Sailing Academy, one of our major strengths is our flexibility. We are able to adjust routes, schedules, stops, and overall trip structure based on weather conditions, training goals, and the preferences of the students onboard.
This voyage typically takes place during the month of November, which is one of the most popular times of year for cruisers heading south along the Baja Peninsula.

During this same period, there is also a very well-known cruising rally called the Baja Ha-Ha, where a hundred boats or more often travel south together in a large flotilla down the Baja Peninsula.
Their route generally involves only a couple of major stops along the way, which works well for many cruisers. At One World Sailing Academy, we prefer a more flexible approach and the ability to adapt our pace and itinerary as conditions change.

As far as offshore sailing passages go, the approximately 1,100-mile voyage down the Baja Peninsula is one of the best stretches of sailing that I personally know of.

Farther north along the Pacific Coast, sailors often encounter colder conditions, larger ocean swell, rougher sea states, and generally more aggressive offshore environments.
The Baja coastline is very different.
The weather is generally warmer, the sailing is predominantly downwind, and the offshore conditions are often far more comfortable and manageable for long-distance cruising.
The weather gradually warms as you head south along the Baja Peninsula. In many ways, it feels like you are sailing back into summer as the environment slowly transitions into a warmer and more summer-like cruising climate.
Sailing down the Baja Peninsula toward Cabo San Lucas, the Cape region, and eventually the Sea of Cortez is truly a fantastic offshore sailing experience.
Like I mentioned earlier, this is a fully immersive ten-day offshore sailing expedition and adventure. Throughout the voyage, we place a heavy emphasis on seamanship, navigation, weather routing, sail configurations, onboard systems, watch standing, anchoring, offshore decision making, and all of the practical skills required to become a capable offshore cruiser or blue water passagemaker.
I personally know of no other sailing school currently conducting this type of fully immersive offshore training passage down the Baja Peninsula.
Our goal is to help students gain real offshore sailing experience while actively participating in the day-to-day operation, navigation, and management of a serious offshore cruising vessel during a true long-distance passage.
This is a major offshore sailing trip and a true example of the type of long-distance passage making that offshore cruisers regularly do.
By the end of this trip, students will have gained an incredible amount of knowledge and hands-on experience involving the operation of a true Category A ocean-rated blue water cruising sailboat, the Amel Super Maramu 2000, during a major offshore passage.
In many respects, this voyage is the quintessential example of what offshore cruising and offshore passage making truly are.
Sailing down the Baja Peninsula along the Pacific coast is a true offshore sailing adventure and one of the great cruising passages on the West Coast of North America.

Throughout this expedition, students have the opportunity to build serious offshore sailing, navigation, seamanship, watch standing, and onboard systems skills while actively participating in a major offshore passage aboard a true blue water cruising vessel.

By the end of this trip, students will have developed a much deeper understanding of offshore cruising, coastal passage making, long-distance sailing, and the operation of a true blue water vessel.
This is an amazing offshore sailing experience, and we truly look forward to conducting this expedition with you come November.
