Jason Wright is a magician—he turned this “Valley Girl” into a real sailor. I’ve since sailed in Tahiti, the British Virgin Islands, and on numerous trips to Catalina and offshore in Southern California.

It all started when my husband decided to buy a simple sailboat for sunny day cruising. We were lucky enough to get a dock in Marina del Rey, right next to a boat owned by one of Jason’s close friends. Jason came over, introduced himself, and before long, he became part of our family.

At the time, I was what you’d call “cabin fluff”—until the day Jason decided it was time for me to learn what sailing was really about.
He stood beside me at the wheel as we left the channel and headed straight into the middle of a boat race. He told me I had the right of way—despite boats all around us—and calmly coached me through my first real experience at the helm in the middle of a sailboat race. I was hooked instantly.
What followed were countless weekend trips to Catalina, each one building my skills and confidence. Jason has a unique way of teaching—he doesn’t just tell you what to do, he explains why. That made all the difference.
Those weekends eventually led to bareboat charters in Tahiti and the British Virgin Islands. Of course, we brought Jason along as our captain. Knowing we were in such capable hands allowed us to experience things most people only dream about.
I’ll never forget the moment I was at the wheel in the Sir Francis Drake Channel and suddenly understood upwind sailing… or the first time I pulled into a fuel dock perfectly—only because Jason was right there, guiding me step by step.
He gave me the confidence to call myself a sailor. From knots to weather, from docking to decision-making, I learned the fundamentals in a way that truly stuck.
Even in difficult conditions—the day we were caught in gale-force winds returning from Catalina, with other boats suffering broken masts and torn sails—Jason remained calm, controlled, and completely capable. He got us home safely without hesitation.
I’m incredibly grateful for everything I learned from him, and I can’t wait to sail with him again. He didn’t just teach me how to sail—he got me completely hooked on the ocean.

sv IBIS
Amel 54-152

While I started sailing as a boy, our purchase of IBIS, a 2010 Amel 54, true blue-water yacht was only the second boat I have ever owned after we sold our 2018 Jeanneau 44 Deck Salon. We hired OWSA to help us prepare IBIS for a 1,500-mile journey and then sail with us to our destination. During our time together, Jason taught me many of the skills necessary for blue-water cruising like the interpretation and utilization of weather prediction, a cohesive approach for the review of cruising guides, how to go about safe and accurate passage planning, control of the boat for docking and close quarters maneuvering, as well as how to prepare the boat and its systems for long distance travel. I couldn’t have done it without Jason’s help and even today, I continue to benefit from my place in the One World sailing family. I wholeheartedly endorse the One World sailing program and recommend it to anyone considering spending time on the water.

Conner and Malvina Maguire

We can’t say enough good things about One World Sailing Academy and Jason. From the very beginning, Jason has gone above and beyond in every aspect of our sailing journey. We actually purchased our current boat through him, and his support didn’t stop there—it only got better.

Jason has been an incredible resource for everything that comes with boat ownership. From mechanical systems and troubleshooting to sails, rigging, paint, and outfitting for blue water cruising, his depth of knowledge is unmatched. He’s not just an instructor or broker—he’s a true, all-around sailing expert who genuinely wants to see his clients succeed.
Beyond that, the hands-on sailing instruction we received was invaluable. Jason taught us highly effective downwind sailing techniques that have made a huge difference in both our speed and comfort offshore. He also helped us build strong navigational skills and confidence in passage planning—skills that have proven essential on longer crossings.
What really sets Jason apart is his availability and willingness to help when it matters most. During our Pacific crossing from Puerto Vallarta to French Polynesia, we lost our generator mid-passage. Jason was the very first person we called. Within an hour or two, he helped us diagnose and resolve the issue, and we were back up and running—making water and continuing our journey safely.
Without Jason’s guidance, we honestly wouldn’t be where we are today in our sailing journey. His experience, patience, and dedication have made a lasting impact on us, and we would highly recommend One World Sailing Academy to anyone serious about learning to sail or preparing for life offshore.
