This coastal cruising passage from Banderas Bay to Barra de Navidad is a dynamic mix of short hops, overnight sailing, and weather-dependent decision-making. Departing from La Cruz, we may begin with a stop in Yelapa before preparing for a night passage around the exposed headland of Cabo Corrientes—where timing, sea state, and routing become key parts of the experience.
If needed, we can anchor at Ipala, just south of Cabo Corrientes, to rest before continuing south, eventually making our way to Chamela, a scenic anchorage with a small fishing village, local restaurants, and nearby islands ideal for snorkeling. From there, we continue to Tenacatita, known for its protected bay, calm waters, and winding mangrove estuaries—perfect for exploring by dinghy—followed by a stop in La Manzanilla to visit its well-known crocodile sanctuary and explore the town.
The passage concludes in Barra de Navidad, with time to enjoy the surrounding area, including nearby Melaque, a laid-back coastal town with a strong local feel.
Throughout the trip, students are fully involved in all aspects of coastal cruising: watchstanding, sail handling, anchoring, navigation, weather interpretation, and onboard systems management. From rounding Cabo Corrientes at night to working into unfamiliar anchorages and exploring remote shorelines by dinghy, this is a hands-on learning environment designed to build confidence through real experience.
