Barra de Navidad is an incredible cruising destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico and a key stop for offshore passage making and instruction in advanced sailing through Barra de Navidad sailing courses. It is a fantastic town with a marina and also features a lagoon where anchoring is possible, along with nearby anchorages such as Tenacatita, which is a well-known and highly regarded cruising anchorage.
A 7 or 10-day training that includes Barra de Navidad would have you fly into Puerto Vallarta in the north or Manzanillo to the south. This depends on the departure point our immersive training course is planning to take.
Depending on the time of year and weather, the voyage is northbound or southbound. A southbound itinerary from the Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay area may include stops such as Yelapa, Chamela, Tenacatita, Barra de Navidad, and onward toward Zihuatanejo before returning to Barra de Navidad.
A northbound itinerary follows the reverse of this route.
Barra de Navidad is an incredible cruising destination regardless of which direction you are traveling.
You’ll enjoy all of the typical activities cruisers experience in these areas, including waterfall hikes, beachcombing, snorkeling, surfing, and whatever other coastal exploration you are interested in.
From a sailing education standpoint, whether northbound or southbound, the passage requires rounding Cabo Corrientes, which is a key offshore routing and decision-making point in the overall itinerary.
Cabo Corrientes is a major headland at the southern entrance to Banderas Bay, and it provides a great opportunity to utilize weather routing, passage planning skills, night navigation, and watch standing.
We will be utilizing and learning about every aspect of a bluewater cruising vessel, including all onboard systems. The course includes instruction in power management, watermaker operation, engine and generator maintenance, regular onboard briefings, crew work, provisioning, cooking meals on board, and all aspects of practical cruising life.
One World Sailing Academy invites you to join us on a 7 or 10-day offshore training passage through the Barra de Navidad region, combining real-world cruising, seamanship, and fully immersive hands-on hands-on learning throughout one of the most beautiful stretches of the Pacific coast of Mexico.
