Offshore Sailboat Electrical Systems: What We Use Aboard One World

Since One World Sailing Academy is heavily focused on vessel systems, along with the operation, maintenance, and management of those systems offshore, the following article will discuss many of the electrical systems we currently use aboard our vessel One World, our Amel Super Maramu 2000. There are many good brands and system configurations available in the offshore cruising world, and there are certainly other systems that work well too. The purpose of this article is not necessarily to say one system is the only correct choice, but rather to discuss some of the systems we currently use aboard our vessel, along with why electrical systems become so important in offshore and blue water cruising. One of the first major systems aboard One World is the electrical system itself. From the factory, the boat was designed as a European-built vessel, so it utilizes a 24-volt DC electrical system along with a 220-volt AC system. In addition to that, we utilize 24-to-12-volt converters to operate many of the onboard electronics and accessories that require 12-volt power. That includes systems such as: Even on a 24-volt boat, there are still a significant number of components and accessories in the marine world that operate on 12 volts, so proper voltage conversion and power management become important parts of the overall electrical system design offshore. One of the questions people often ask is: why use a 24-volt system instead of a 12-volt system aboard an offshore cruising boat? One of the major advantages of higher-voltage DC systems is efficiency. As voltage increases, amperage decreases for the same power demand, which means smaller wire sizes can often be utilized throughout various onboard systems. In practical terms, many 12-volt systems require significantly larger wire sizes compared to equivalent 24-volt systems carrying the same electrical loads. That becomes especially important on larger offshore vessels where wire runs can become quite long and electrical efficiency matters. Overall, 24-volt systems tend to operate more efficiently for larger cruising boats with heavier electrical demands. Those remaining 12-volt requirements are easily handled through the use of DC step-down converters. On our vessel, we utilize Victron Energy 24-to-12-volt converters to power many of those systems. Over time, I upgraded the original converters aboard the boat from smaller 12-amp converters to larger 20-amp converters in order to increase system capacity and allow additional room for future system expansion and electrical demands. In addition to that, because the vessel was originally designed around European 220-volt AC power, there are some differences when operating the boat in the United States, where 120-volt appliances and utilities are far more common. For years, we’ve handled that by utilizing portable 220-to-120-volt step-down transformers plugged into outlets in various locations throughout the vessel, which then provide standard 110/120-volt power for U.S.-based appliances and equipment. That setup has worked well for us over the years, but we’re currently in the process of changing and upgrading that part of the system to create a more integrated onboard 120-volt solution. To improve that setup, I recently purchased a Victron Energy 3000-watt inverter system. The inverter utilizes 24-volt DC input and provides 110/120-volt AC output, allowing us to create a dedicated onboard 120-volt electrical system alongside the vessel’s original 220-volt system. That inverter will feed a dedicated AC distribution panel with three separate 120-volt circuits. One circuit will supply the aft cabin, aft restroom, and possibly the walkthrough cabin area. A second dedicated circuit will feed the galley alone, including multiple outlets intended for higher-demand appliances commonly used in the galley. And the third circuit will supply the forward cabin and forward head. All of those new circuits will be wired as dedicated 110/120-volt systems. So aboard the vessel, we will now have both 220-volt outlets and 110/120-volt outlets available throughout different areas of the boat. Regardless of the specific power requirements of onboard equipment or personal electronics, we’ll be able to accommodate both systems aboard the vessel. Our shore power system is configured around a 220-volt shore power inlet, which matches the vessel’s original European electrical design. We also utilize an onboard transformer system, which gives us flexibility when connecting to different shore power standards around the world. If 220-volt shore power is available, we can plug directly into that system. But we can also adapt the vessel to utilize 110/120-volt shore power by simply changing the plug configuration at the end of the shore power cord and switching the transformer input configuration accordingly. That flexibility allows us to operate the vessel in marinas and facilities utilizing either 220-volt or 110/120-volt shore power systems. We also carry multiple international shore power plug configurations that match various power systems used throughout different parts of the world. In most cases, we’re simply changing the plug adapter itself rather than replacing the entire shore power cord. In addition to that, the vessel is equipped with an Onan generator system rated at approximately 7 to 7.5 kilowatts. It’s a 50 Hz, 220-volt generator designed to support the vessel’s primary onboard AC systems and overall electrical demands while offshore or away from shore power. When operating, the generator is capable of powering virtually the entire vessel with some reasonable power management employed onboard. That includes systems such as: In addition to the generator system, the vessel is also equipped with three 475-watt SunPower solar panels. Those solar panels provide a significant amount of renewable charging capability offshore and have dramatically reduced our dependence on the generator during normal day-to-day cruising operations. Under typical sunny conditions, the solar array is capable of fully charging the battery banks into float mode on a daily basis. Because of that, the generator has effectively become more of a redundant backup charging system rather than a primary daily power source. That level of charging capability becomes extremely valuable offshore, especially during extended periods at anchor or while living aboard full-time. The vessel is also equipped with a 4,000-watt Magnum inverter system utilizing 24-volt DC input and 220-volt AC output. We originally installed that Magnum inverter

What an Advanced Offshore Sailing Course Should Actually Teach You

Most people think advanced sailing means more in-depth knowledge and skill in sail trim, heavy weather sailing techniques, or downwind sailing techniques. But a true advanced offshore sailing course should go far beyond sailing skills. What you should expect to learn—and what we teach at One World Sailing Academy—starts before we even leave the dock. Before departure, we conduct a safety orientation with an overview of all onboard safety systems, including their location, operation, and proper use. We also establish watch schedules for the passage ahead. And somewhere along the trip, we conduct emergency procedures and actual safety drills. Man overboard drills. Life raft deployment scenarios. First aid situations. EPIRB activations. Flooding procedures. The use of watertight bulkheads, including discussion of collision bulkheads and their purpose. Fire response. Emergency communication procedures. Another important part of offshore safety is the proper use of jacklines, harnesses, and tether systems, along with safe movement around the vessel offshore—especially at night or in rough weather. Because staying on the boat, staying safe, and understanding emergency systems offshore is not optional. All of these things become critically important offshore. Then we move into a complete in-depth overview of onboard vessel systems. That includes locating all systems, understanding how they operate, utilizing them correctly, and discussing the scheduled maintenance required to keep them functioning properly offshore. For example: And then we move into electrical and power management systems: Then we move into communication, navigation, and offshore planning systems. We teach how and when to utilize systems like Starlink offshore—including when to activate it once you’re offshore and how it can become an important communication and emergency resource while cruising. Weather routing and forecasting tools are another major part of the training, including applications like Windy and PredictWind, along with other resources that can be extremely valuable while cruising. We discuss cruising communities and information-sharing platforms like No Foreign Land, SeaPeople, and regional Facebook cruising groups, and how useful those resources can become when traveling through unfamiliar areas—not to mention how great they can be for social interaction and networking among other blue water cruisers. Cruising guides are another major topic—because a good cruising guide can be incredibly valuable when navigating different geographic regions. We then move into navigation and onboard navigation systems. That includes the use of chart plotters, radar, AIS, forward-facing sonar for approaching anchorages and nearshore navigation, route planning, dead reckoning, position awareness, and offshore navigation techniques. We also work with electronic navigation systems and charting platforms such as Navionics and C-Map, along with traditional paper charts and the fundamentals behind marine navigation. We also cover VHF radio communication and etiquette, navigation light configurations, collision avoidance, and understanding how vessels identify themselves and communicate offshore and at night. Because a true offshore sailor needs to understand both modern electronic navigation systems and the core principles behind navigation itself. Along the passage, as opportunities arise, we discuss fine-tuning sail handling and sail trim as conditions change. We talk about things like jib sheet car placement, mainsail twist, ketch rig sail balance, sailing with the mizzen, balancing the sail plan, sail combinations for different wind angles and wind velocities, and the use of downwind sails and spinnaker poles. Sail trim is not the primary focus of the course—it’s simply taught as we go, similar to how you would naturally be sailing and trimming underway during an actual offshore passage. Because a fully immersed week-long offshore sailing course is dynamic, and learning happens continually while actively operating the vessel underway. Heavy-weather techniques and offshore sail management strategies are discussed throughout the trip, including how and when to heave-to. Understanding how to properly heave-to can be extremely valuable offshore—whether to give the crew an opportunity to rest, take a break during difficult weather, ride out a storm, troubleshoot a problem onboard, or help time an arrival during preferred daylight hours. Because sometimes offshore seamanship is knowing when to slow down, regroup, and let the boat take care of you for a while. Anchoring techniques and anchorage management are another major focus of the training. Different types of bottom composition. Appropriate anchor scope for varying conditions. Swing room. Anchor alarms. Bow and stern anchoring techniques. We discuss anchoring for changing weather and more demanding conditions, along with ways to improve comfort at anchor—including the use of roll stabilizers. And when conditions require it, we talk about standing anchor watch and monitoring the vessel in rough or windy weather. Docking and close-quarters maneuvering are also important parts of the training. That includes docking in headwinds, tailwinds, and crosswinds, along with communication between crew members and understanding how different boats react in tight maneuvering situations. Dock lines and spring lines are taught as important tools for controlling the vessel while docking or undocking—regardless of wind or docking direction. Bow thrusters and other maneuvering tools are discussed as part of close-quarters boat handling and marina maneuvering. Confidently handling a vessel in a marina or tight anchorage is an important part of becoming a capable cruising sailor. Dinghy operation and management are another important part of cruising life—because in many cruising destinations, the dinghy effectively becomes your car. That includes safe dinghy operation, the use of safety lanyards and kill switches, beach landings, launching and retrieval techniques, and the use of dinghy wheels in different environments. Dinghy maintenance is discussed as well, since the dinghy is often one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment aboard a cruising vessel. Liveaboard systems management is another important topic. That includes the operation and management of systems like dishwashers, washing machines, air conditioning, heating systems, refrigeration, and freezers. Because true offshore and blue water cruising isn’t just about sailing. It’s about learning how to properly operate and manage an entire floating home and all of the systems that support living aboard for extended periods of time. Emergency preparedness includes ditch bags, EPIRB activation procedures, flooding response, and emergency vessel management offshore. Advanced Offshore Liveaboard Sail Training in Southern California

What Serious Sailors Need to Know In Southern California, there are plenty of sailing schools. Most of them focus on basic and some intermediate sailing, with a noticeable drop-off when it comes to anything truly advanced. I challenge anyone to find an advanced sailing course in Southern California that takes place on a true bluewater cruising vessel. I’ve looked, and I haven’t found it. If your goal is day sailing, or maybe chartering a coastal cruising boat and sailing around Southern California, then many of these schools can absolutely help you get there—especially if they’re operating well-equipped, properly maintained boats. Even if some programs offer multi-day or liveaboard training, it’s often done on boats that aren’t truly designed or equipped for offshore or bluewater sailing, and sometimes with more people onboard than is ideal for effective, hands-on training. And that matters—because the platform you train on directly affects what you actually learn. In my opinion, if the boat isn’t equipped and built for offshore passages, it’s misleading to call it a true advanced course. So what is advanced offshore liveaboard training? Advanced offshore liveaboard training isn’t getting on a boat, leaving the dock, and coming back a few hours later to go home. It’s a multi-day advanced liveaboard training course where you’re fully immersed aboard a true bluewater cruising vessel, operating in a cruising ground that presents real challenges and requires the use of all onboard systems. In other words, it becomes an immersive learning experience. You’re living aboard for multiple days. You’re sailing between destinations. The boat and its systems are operating continuously—just as they would be during long-distance cruising. It’s also a flexible learning process. People arrive with different levels of experience, and the training adapts to meet them where they are, focusing on what they need to move forward. You’re learning how to stand watch—both day and night. You’ll be on watch while others are asleep, taking on real responsibility for the boat and the crew. You’re learning how to manage fatigue and adjust to changing sleep cycles. You start to understand the natural rhythm of being offshore—something that simply can’t be taught in a few hours. At the same time, you’re managing the boat itself. Power management, onboard systems, electrical awareness, charging systems—how everything works together over time, not just in theory. You’re working on anchoring techniques, weather routing, sail configuration, and onboard systems management—all in real conditions. You learn offshore navigation—both traditional and electronic—and how to apply it in real situations. That includes situational awareness, understanding shipping lanes using radar and AIS, and following the rules of the road for all vessel traffic. You learn weather forecasting and routing—how to use tools like Windy, PredictWind, and others to interpret forecasts and make informed decisions about where to go and when. You learn how to stand watch, including night sailing—what to look for, how to manage traffic, and how to stay alert when the rest of the crew is off watch. Anchoring becomes a real skill set. Not just dropping the hook in a calm harbor, but working through different conditions—rolly anchorages, protected anchorages, bow and stern setups, and even storm anchoring techniques, including the use of roll stabilizers. You’re also managing the boat itself. That means understanding onboard systems—how to operate a watermaker, how to manage battery charging, how much power you’re using, and how everything ties together over time. Maintenance is part of it too. You learn what routine maintenance looks like, how often it needs to be done, and how to deal with breakdowns when they happen. And then there’s the crew side of it—coordinating crew, setting watch schedules, making decisions as conditions change, provisioning, and even cooking while living aboard. You also learn to stay calm and flexible in your decision-making. You might make a decision, and then conditions change—and you have to adjust. That’s part of it. Learning how to adapt without overreacting is a big part of becoming a capable offshore sailor. In Southern California, we run extended trips throughout the Channel Islands National Park. It’s a true proving ground for offshore sailing and bluewater cruising. You’re making open water crossings and covering real distances between destinations. There are no marinas in the Channel Islands, so you’re anchoring everywhere you go. You’re also crossing busy shipping lanes, with commercial traffic moving up and down the coast to and from Los Angeles and Long Beach. That creates real navigational challenges and forces you to stay aware at all times. Conditions are constantly changing. You might have no wind at all one day, and heavy wind the next. Flat seas, rough seas—everything in between. These conditions force you to make decisions. Where you go, when you go, and how you get there all depend on what you’re seeing in real time. And because you’re out there for days at a time, you’re using all of the boat’s systems continuously. You’re not just learning about them—you’re relying on them, which means you have to understand them. All of this combined is what prepares you for offshore and bluewater sailing—the skills you need before you go and throughout the entire journey. These are the skills required to go offshore, cross oceans, and ultimately circumnavigate the world. The boat matters. The platform we train on is a Category A Amel Super Maramu—a world-renowned bluewater cruising vessel, designed and built for offshore passages. It’s fully equipped with the systems you would expect on a serious offshore boat. Collision bulkheads, watertight bulkheads, a watermaker, solar, lithium batteries, and modern navigation equipment including radar, AIS, and forward-looking sonar. It also carries the full range of safety gear—EPIRB, life raft, medical kit—everything required for offshore sailing. This is the kind of boat people actually use to cross oceans, and that matters when it comes to training. You’re not learning on a stripped-down or simplified platform—you’re learning on a fully capable offshore vessel. What It Actually Takes to Prepare for Offshore & Blue Water Sailing

So what does it actually take to prepare for offshore and blue water sailing? In my mind, there are two paths—and both of them can work. One may be more efficient than the other, but they’re both valid. Let’s start with the first path. Path One: The Long Way The first path is the one that a lot of people take—and the one I took myself. It usually begins with some basic sailing instruction. Maybe a beginner course, and then something a little more intermediate—like an ASA 104 class. That gets people started. From there, many people begin gaining experience on their own. In my case, I started buying boats—smaller ones at first—and over time moved into larger vessels. I owned a number of sailboats over the years, and that became my classroom. What followed was a long period of self-teaching. I had to learn how to maintain, repair, install, and upgrade systems on my own, because there were no advanced courses available to take. I had heard about them, but I never actually saw them being offered anywhere. That led me down a different path. I ended up teaching myself a trade—becoming a shipwright, which means developing skills across multiple trades related to working on vessels. Over time, I worked on thousands of boats. Diesel mechanic, electrical, plumbing, rigging—and alongside that, I was teaching sailing as well. So everything beyond the basics had to be learned incrementally over time through experience. And that process takes time. In my case, it took 15 to 20 years to build the level of knowledge and skill required to safely operate offshore and eventually move into blue water cruising. There are skill levels to accomplish offshore and blue water sailing that need to be achieved, but the education a real sailor is working toward is never actually finished. To continue on that path, for me, it was a very long road. It included ownership of multiple sailboats—about seven over time—starting with smaller vessels and working up. It took thousands of hours of labor working on those boats. Learning systems. Fixing things. Installing equipment. Figuring things out the hard way. It took hundreds and hundreds of sailing trips. It took talking to other sailors, asking questions, and doing a lot of research. And all of this took place before YouTube. In many cases, before the internet was even widely available. Even before GPS. So the learning process was slow and steady. It was built over a long period of time—through experience, repetition, and problem-solving. Path Two: A More Efficient Way Today, that slow path has been sped up quite a bit. There’s a lot more information available now. People can self-teach, research online, watch videos, and learn from others in ways that simply didn’t exist before. And that definitely helps. But what we’re trying to do is offer a better path—one that’s far more efficient and helps you achieve your goals faster. The path we offer doesn’t require owning multiple sailboats, outfitting them over time, or spending decades figuring things out on your own. Instead, we get you immersed in offshore and blue water sailing right from the beginning. From day one, you’re stepping into the real environment. In many cases, our trips start with a night passage. You’re immediately exposed to watchkeeping, navigation, and the rhythm of offshore sailing. And all of this takes place on a true offshore, blue water cruising sailboat—the Amel Super Maramu 2000. The Platform Matters We’re also teaching on a boat that’s fully outfitted for real cruising—the Amel Super Maramu 2000. It’s equipped with lithium batteries, solar, a generator, and a watermaker. You’re learning how to manage power, water, and systems the way you would on a real offshore passage. It’s set up for living aboard—multiple refrigerators and freezers, a dishwasher, a washing machine. Everything you’d expect on a serious cruising vessel. We also handle the day-to-day realities. Cleaning the bottom, maintaining the boat, managing systems underway—this is all part of the experience. From a sailing standpoint, the boat is fully equipped. Multiple downwind sails, sail configurations for every point of sail and a wide range of wind conditions. And of course, it’s outfitted with the full range of offshore safety equipment. Learning in the Real Environment In addition to that, our passages take you to incredible locations that require you to use the boat the way it’s actually meant to be used. Channel Islands National Park, Catalina Island, offshore Baja California, the Sea of Cortez, and the tropical waters of mainland Mexico are all perfect examples of places that require every feature of a blue water vessel—living aboard and fully immersed in the skills needed to cruise those areas using this type of equipment. You’re not just learning in theory—you’re actively using every system and applying the techniques required for offshore and blue water sailing. That’s the difference. You’re learning the skills and techniques in the environment where they actually matter—you’re fully immersed. You’re on the boat, actively doing it—without having to buy six or seven boats and spend 20 years learning. Because of that, you can compress years of learning into a very short period of time. What might take a decade or more to figure out on your own can be learned quickly when you’re fully immersed in it. And it doesn’t stop there. We also support our students beyond the training. We also offer our clients broker services as buyer’s agents—at no cost to you—so you can utilize our many years of experience and knowledge to help you find the right vessel, if ownership and cruising are your goals. Why Most Sailboats Are Not Designed for Blue Water Cruising

A majority of modern sailboats being built today are production sailboats. These boats are designed to be accessible, comfortable, and efficient for what most people actually do with them—day sailing and coastal cruising. And many of them do that job very well. But the kind of sailing I’m talking about is different. Offshore sailing and blue water cruising place a completely different set of demands on a boat. It’s not just about sailing performance—it’s about endurance, self-sufficiency, and the ability to handle changing conditions over long periods of time. Production boats are built to meet demand at scale. They’re optimized for space, comfort, and ease of use, and they’re built efficiently so more people can get out on the water. But a true offshore cruising sailboat is built with a different purpose in mind. It still needs to sail well. It still needs to be comfortable. But it also needs to carry more fuel and water, support more robust systems, provide better protection for the crew, and be capable of operating independently for extended periods of time. And that’s where the differences really start to show. There’s also a cost component to all of this. Offshore cruising boats are more expensive to build. Stronger construction, more robust systems, and higher-quality components all add cost. Production boats are built for volume, which keeps them more affordable and accessible to a larger market. That’s why purpose-built offshore boats tend to carry a higher price—you’re paying for durability, capability, and independence. Where Design Really Starts to Matter Another major difference comes down to the systems and the way the boat is built. Production sailboats typically aren’t equipped with the level of system redundancy or structural strength required for extended offshore or blue water cruising. That’s simply not what they’re designed for. When you start talking about offshore passages—days at sea, changing weather, and the need to be completely self-sufficient—the priorities shift. A true offshore cruising boat is built with that reality in mind from the start. That often means a stronger overall structure, with additional reinforcement in key areas and features like watertight or collision bulkheads built in from the beginning. These aren’t afterthoughts—they’re part of a design intended to handle repeated loads and real offshore conditions over time. The systems onboard follow that same philosophy. You’re typically looking at larger fuel and water capacity, watermakers, more robust electrical systems, and equipment that allows the boat to operate independently for extended periods. Sail handling is also designed to be manageable short-handed, often from the cockpit, because offshore sailing is rarely about having a large crew—it’s about safety, efficiency, and control—even while short-handed. None of these things are necessary for day sailing or coastal cruising. But once you move offshore, they start to matter—quickly. Another common approach is to start with a more affordable coastal cruising boat and then upgrade it with systems you’d typically find on a blue water vessel. And to a certain extent, that can make a meaningful difference. You can add better safety gear, increase energy capacity, install a watermaker, and improve sail handling. All of that improves capability. But there are limits to what can be changed. Every boat starts with a set of design priorities. Hull shape, structural layout, tankage, and load-carrying ability are built in from the beginning. They’re not things you can fundamentally redesign later. So while a well-upgraded coastal cruiser can expand its range, it doesn’t fully transform into a purpose-built offshore cruising boat. And that distinction matters more as the miles add up. A good way to understand this is to look at more extreme examples. If you were planning something like a Northwest Passage transit or high-latitude sailing, the differences in design become obvious very quickly. A vessel designed for lower-latitude coastal cruising has very different priorities than one designed for remote, cold, and unpredictable environments. In those conditions, you’re not just thinking about comfort—you’re thinking about durability, protection, and how the boat holds up over time without outside support. That’s an extreme example, but it highlights the broader point: As the demands increase, the importance of the original design becomes more critical. The same idea applies even in more favorable conditions. There’s still a meaningful gap between a boat designed for coastal cruising and one designed for offshore passages. Many people successfully take coastal boats long distances. But there’s always a level of compromise, and most of that comes down to structure and how the boat handles load and impact over time. Take rudder design. On many coastal boats, the rudder is more exposed. If you strike something, that load goes directly into it. On offshore-oriented designs, you may see a skeg-hung rudder that helps absorb some of that impact. The same applies to keel attachment and overall structure—how loads are transferred and how the boat is built to handle long-term stress. These differences don’t matter much on a short sail. But offshore, over time, they matter a lot. Performance vs Comfort vs Reality Many coastal cruising boats lean toward performance. They’re lighter, faster, and more responsive—and that’s part of what makes them fun. But offshore, those same traits come with trade-offs. These boats tend to pound more into a seaway, and their motion can be sharper and more abrupt. Over time, that wears on both the boat and the crew. They also tend to be more tender, meaning you’ll reef earlier and more often. Heavier displacement boats, by contrast, tend to be more stable and more “sea kindly.” The motion is slower, more predictable, and easier to live with over long periods. That doesn’t mean speed isn’t important—it is. Speed is a designed safety feature on many boats, allowing you to shorten passages and reduce time exposed to changing conditions. But offshore, it’s about balance. A well-designed cruising boat blends performance with comfort, control, and durability. The Difference Between Day Sailing, Coastal Cruising, Offshore Sailing, and Blue Water Sailing

In previous articles, I’ve described the difference between coastal cruising, offshore sailing, and blue water sailing. This article is meant to further define those differences so they’re clearly understood. Let’s start with day sailing. Day sailing typically involves short trips that are specifically designed just to go sailing—for the pure enjoyment of it. You leave and come back the same day, often returning to the same harbor you departed from. It’s a very minimal level of commitment. The focus is almost entirely on sailing itself—steering the boat, trimming sails, and enjoying the conditions. Day sailing can be done on just about any size vessel, although smaller boats tend to make it more engaging and hands-on. With coastal cruising, there’s a noticeable shift in the level of skill required. More comes into play—understanding onboard systems, weather and weather routing, sail configurations, navigation, the rules of the road, and maintaining proper watchkeeping at all times. You’re no longer just going out for a few hours to sail. You’re starting to operate the boat more completely. These trips are still generally shorter in nature, but they require a broader and more developed skill set. Coastal cruising also offers ample opportunities to explore. You can go ashore, hike, dive, snorkel, and spend time experiencing different places—whether that’s local culture, restaurants, or just walking around and seeing what’s there. There’s a lot of variety. And that’s really the whole point of coastal cruising in the first place—to explore different areas, regions, cultures, and even countries over time. In addition, coastal cruising over longer periods of time and greater distances starts to build a much wider range of skills. As you move along a coastline for hundreds or even thousands of miles, you’re dealing with actual conditions—and at times, stepping into offshore sailing. You’re maintaining your vessel, handling minor repairs as they come up, solving problems, doing more in-depth route planning, working with different anchoring situations, and paying closer attention to weather. All of those things begin to matter more. At that point, the skills required start to overlap with offshore and even blue water sailing—but you’re still operating with options, which is what makes coastal cruising different. Offshore sailing, as the name implies, takes you further away from land. The purpose of offshore sailing is to get from point A to point B when that distance requires you to leave the coastline. For example, you might be coastal cruising and need to travel a few hundred miles to reach the next cruising area. That distance becomes an offshore passage. At that point, the emphasis begins to shift. All of the same elements from coastal cruising still apply, but now additional layers are added. Watchkeeping becomes more structured. You have to manage fatigue and sleep cycles. Weather routing becomes more important and more deliberate. You’re managing your systems more closely, and crew coordination becomes more critical. There’s less margin for error. In my experience, shorter offshore passages can actually be more difficult than longer ones. A three-day passage can feel harder than a ten-day passage, simply because it takes time to adapt to the rhythm. For me, it takes a few days to get used to the sleep cycle—standing watches and breaking sleep into shorter periods. Around day four, I start to settle into it, and by the end of the first week, I’m fully in the groove. At that point, continuing on for another week isn’t nearly as difficult because the adjustment has already been made. You also need to be well-versed in emergency procedures. When you’re offshore, you need to know what you’re doing and be able to handle situations as they arise without relying on outside help. Blue water sailing requires all of the skills from the previous stages—but applied over much longer periods of time. Instead of hours or a few days, you’re now talking about weeks, sometimes even a month. Some ocean crossings can last 30 days. Many are at least a week, and something like a Pacific crossing is typically around three weeks. So you’re doing all the same things—but for much longer, and with greater consistency. Watchkeeping becomes critical. Crew coordination becomes critical. Regular checks—rigging inspections, checking the bilges, monitoring systems—these all become part of a disciplined routine. Consistency matters. One of the interesting things about blue water sailing is that it can actually become repetitive. Many blue water cruisers will tell you that large portions of an ocean passage can feel the same day after day, especially in steady trade wind conditions. Because of that, it’s easy to become complacent. That’s something you have to stay aware of. Even when conditions feel stable, you still need to remain diligent and continue your checks and routines. There’s also an ongoing debate in the cruising world about watchkeeping on blue water passages. For me, there really isn’t a debate—you stand watches. On a crewed vessel, proper watchkeeping is not just good practice, it’s required. It’s how you maintain situational awareness, avoid traffic, monitor weather, and keep the vessel and crew operating safely. Single-handed sailing is a different situation. You still need rest, and managing sleep becomes part of the challenge. That usually means shorter sleep cycles, using radar or AIS alarms to help maintain awareness of your surroundings. Coastal cruising is often described as shorter trips, but “short” is relative. A coastal passage could still be hundreds of miles. It could involve an overnight sail or even multiple nights underway. What defines coastal cruising isn’t the distance—it’s the proximity to land. You’re generally paralleling a coastline, moving from one location to another. The key is that you still have options. If weather changes or something mechanical comes up, you can usually alter course and get somewhere safe. And for a lot of people, coastal cruising is exactly what they want. There’s no need to go a thousand miles offshore. The goal is to cruise in an area that’s interesting and enjoyable—places where you can pull in, drop the anchor, go ashore, and explore. Moving from one location to the next, experiencing different anchorages, towns, and environments—that’s what coastal cruising is all about. It’s a fantastic way to sail. Blue water sailing is different. The term “blue water sailing” originated from sailors making ocean crossings. It refers to the deep blue color of the water you see once you’re far enough offshore. That darker, clearer blue is a visual indicator that you’re no longer in coastal or continental shelf waters—you’re out in the open ocean. A lot of people think blue water sailing simply means crossing an ocean. And that’s true—but it’s not the whole picture. Blue water sailing also includes offshore passages where you’re far enough from land that you can’t just pull into a harbor, get fuel, provision, or wait out weather. You’re committed to the passage. You’re out there for an extended period of time. Blue water cruising is really the connection between coastal cruising areas—it’s the ocean you cross in between. It’s what gets you from one region to another. You leave one coastal cruising ground, make a passage—sometimes across an ocean—and arrive at another. And while coastal cruising is about exploring different places, blue water sailing is about the journey itself. You’re not stopping along the way. You’re not pulling into different anchorages every day. You’re experiencing the passage—the rhythm of it, the responsibility of it, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing it. But blue water passages are different. They are long passages with no quick exit. Once you’re committed, you’re committed. A good example is sailing from North America or Central America to the South Pacific. Once you enter the trade winds, you’re sailing downwind—and you’re effectively committed to your destination. Turning around isn’t really an option. That would mean sailing upwind for hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles, which in most cases just isn’t realistic. Once you’re in it, you’re going. And that’s really the key difference. It’s not about how far offshore you are—it’s about how big of a commitment you’ve made, your level of exposure, the consequences of your decisions, and the type of vessel you’re on. It’s built for durability over time, not just occasional use. The systems are more robust—electrical, plumbing, steering—and there’s redundancy built in. Things like collision bulkheads, watertight bulkheads, larger fuel capacity, and well-thought-out sail handling all start to matter in a real way. Because offshore, you don’t get a second chance to rethink your setup. There’s also a mental shift that happens when you move into blue water sailing. You realize pretty quickly that you can’t just pull into a marina. You can’t call for quick help. There are no quick fixes when you’re out there in the middle of the ocean. You have to rely on your own knowledge, your tools, your spare parts—and your ability to come up with solutions when problems arise. Small problems matter more. There’s usually a story behind why someone wants to learn how to sail. For a lot of people, it starts way before they ever step on a boat. Maybe it’s something from school—history, exploration, discovery. Maybe it’s movies, or growing up near the ocean and watching sailboats out on the water. There’s just something about it that sticks. A quiet thought in the back of your mind: I’d like to learn how to do that someday. That’s the foundation. That initial connection to adventure, exploration, and a different way of living. Then people take the first step. They sign up for a sailing class. And here’s what happens almost every time. They learn the basics—how to tack, how to jibe, how to steer a boat—and it clicks. Not perfectly, but enough. Enough to realize, this is actually pretty cool. And more importantly, it sparks something deeper: the desire to learn more. That’s where the typical sailing school model takes over. Most schools are built around incremental learning. One class leads to the next, and then the next. Each level costs more money, takes more time, and is usually done on relatively small boats with minimal systems. The focus stays narrow—mostly on sail handling and basic operation. As far as most programs go, it just doesn’t exist in a meaningful way. So can anyone learn to sail? Yes. But the better question is—what are you actually trying to learn? If your goal is to steer a boat, trim sails, and understand the basics, almost anyone can do that. But if your goal is to step into real cruising—to understand the boat, the systems, the environment, and how it all works together—then you need a different kind of experience. Hikes and Landscapes of the Pacific Coast: Southern California to Mexico

From the sharp cliffs of Catalina Island to Channel Islands National Park, and even further south to the desert shores of the Sea of Cortez and the vibrant jungles of Mainland Mexico, the destinations One World Sailing Academy visits offer a striking and ever-changing variety of hiking experiences. So vast, in fact, that even after more than a decade of sailing and exploring these regions, there remain hundreds of miles of countless trails and inland routes still left undiscovered. Catalina Island Catalina Island offers one of the most accessible yet rewarding hiking experiences along the Southern California coast, a main highlight being the iconic Trans-Catalina Trail. Stretching roughly 38 miles across the island, this trail takes hikers through a surprising range of terrain from coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific, Los Angeles, and other distant islands to rolling hills blanketed in chaparral. Along the route, hikers pass through key points such as Avalon, Blackjack Campground, Airport in the Sky, Little Harbor, Two Harbors, and Parson’s Landing each offering rest stops and sweeping ocean views. The trail’s elevation changes provide both challenge and reward, with ridgeline sections revealing panoramic vistas that evokes a sense of freedom and serenity that is beyond anything you could come by in the bustling city of Los Angeles. Wildlife is another defining feature of the experience. The island is home to the iconic American bison, originally introduced in the early 20th century for a movie production, as well as the endemic Catalina Island fox, a species found nowhere else in the world. Encounters with these animals, combined with the island’s relative isolation, give the hike a distinctly untamed feeling despite its proximity to the mainland. Channel Islands National Park In contrast, Channel Islands National Park offers a more remote and untouched hiking environment, having no small towns like Avalon or Two Harbors. Often referred to as “North America’s Galápagos,” the park is made up of five islands; Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara, each with its own unique terrain and highlights. Hiking here feels markedly more secluded than on Catalina. Trails wind through coastal bluffs, grassy plateaus, and rugged cliffs, often with few other hikers in sight. The islands are known for their vibrant seasonal greenery and wildflower blooms, which transform the landscape during the spring months. On San Miguel Island, there is most notably an all-day, ranger-guided hike that takes you across the island to Point Bennet, totalling 16 miles round-trip. This guided experience offers insight and a valuable education into the fragile ecosystems that make the Channel Islands so unique. With limited infrastructure and strict conservation protections, hiking in the Channel Islands is an immersive experience and an opportunity to experience coastal California as it existed long before modern development. Sea of Cortez Further south, the landscape shifts dramatically along the Sea of Cortez, where desert meets sea in one of the most visually striking environments in North America. Here, hikes are defined by heat, volcanic rock, and the contrast between arid terrain and brilliant warm waters teeming with diverse sea life. Near Puerto Escondido, there is a canyon hike walking distance from the marina that leads into the hike named Steinbeck Canyon by local cruisers. This narrow canyon offers an adventurous route through towering rock walls, with sections that require boulder scrambling, short rope-assisted climbs, and navigation through natural rock pools if you visit in the fall or early winter after bountiful rain in the summer. The hike is both physically engaging and visually dramatic. Off the coast of Loreto, Isla Coronado offers a visually attractive adventure. This inactive volcanic island features a steep hike to its summit, where panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and surrounding desert coastline stretch in every direction. It is important to note that nearing summer, the rising temperatures can make hiking quite unforgiving without any available shade on many hikes, and thus timing of when to go becomes vital. Early sunrise or sunset hikes with headlamps are preferred on excessively hot days. Mainland Mexico On Mainland Mexico, the environment transforms once again—this time into dense, tropical landscapes. Hiking here often means moving through thick vegetation, shaded trails, and vibrant ecosystems alive with birds, insects, and plant life. Located on passage between the Baja Peninsula and Mainland Mexico is an isolated, small island known as Isla Isabela, also named the Galapagos of Mexico. The island is less than half a mile wide and is made up of about eight to nine craters. It features an astounding population of brown pelicans, frigates, seagulls, and blue-footed boobies as well as iguanas. Due its importance as a seabird rookery, it was declared a National Park in the 1980s through efforts of the French maritime explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who lived on the island for nine months. Near the coastal village of Chacala, one notable hike leads to the summit of an inactive volcano overlooking the Pacific. The trail winds through jungle terrain before opening up to sweeping coastal views of the town below and the surrounding areas. In the traditional village of Yelapa located in Banderos Bay and accessible by boat only, there is a fantastic hike that leads through the jungle to a waterfall that drops into a pool large enough to provide a refreshing swim. Over the past several years, there has been an explosion of interest in bluewater cruising and the idea of exploring the world under sail. In my view, this shift started well before the pandemic and was then accelerated by it, as people began to question traditional routines and seriously consider alternative lifestyles. The conventional path—steady job, predictable routine, weekends off, a couple weeks of vacation each year, buying a home, building a career and family—was once deeply appealing. After periods of global instability like World War II, people longed for structure, security, and normalcy, and that lifestyle delivered exactly that. But in modern times, that same structure can feel very different. What was once seen as stability can now feel unchallenging, predictable, and, for many, disconnected from any sense of adventure or meaning—often far removed from nature, especially in urban environments. This is, of course, a matter of perspective, but it’s one I hear more and more often. People start asking themselves simple but important questions: Why am I doing this? What is the point? There’s a growing sense that you can follow that path for decades, only to arrive at the end of it with limited time and energy left to actually enjoy life on your own terms. There’s been a growing hunger for something different—something more flexible, something with more meaning. For many, it’s a pull that’s hard to clearly define. It’s a desire to reconnect with nature, whether that’s the ocean, the mountains, or remote stretches of coastline. It’s a deeper connection to the world around you—something more powerful, and for some, even spiritual in nature. At the same time, there’s a large community of retired sailors who followed that traditional path for decades and are now out cruising. When you talk to them, you tend to hear the same thing over and over again—they’re happy they made it happen, but many of them waited 20 or 30 years to finally do what they had always wanted to do. I’ve seen it firsthand, and I’m not immune to it myself. For a long time, the reality was that making a living while sailing full-time was extremely difficult. The structure of society didn’t really support it. You had to build your life first, and then maybe—later—you could go. There is a big shift happening now toward alternative lifestyles. Technology like Starlink has made it possible to stay connected from almost anywhere in the world, and social media has opened the door for some people to actually earn a living while traveling. The rise of remote work and what are now commonly called digital nomads has made a lifestyle that once seemed unrealistic far more attainable. At the same time, YouTube has played a major role in this shift. Channels like SV Delos and Sailing La Vagabonde, among many others, not only gave people a front-row seat to life at sea, but also proved that it was possible to monetize that lifestyle. That realization changed everything. It showed that you didn’t necessarily have to wait decades to go—you could build a life around it in real time. As a result, there’s been a massive explosion of sailing channels with large audiences, and many of those viewers are now attempting to follow a similar path. And underneath all of that is something deeper—a very human desire to wander, to explore, and to see the world as we did for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. But for most people, that desire gets buried. Society lays out a path, and it’s easy to follow because it’s structured, familiar, and constantly reinforced with a false sense of security. At every stage—school, career, family, house, retirement—you’re told what comes next, and if you stay on that track, you’re considered successful, often judged primarily by financial success. Perspectives outside of that framework aren’t always part of the conversation, and it leaves very little room to question whether the path you’re on is actually what you want. In the blue water cruising community, success is defined very differently. It’s rooted in experiences, memories, friendships, and the kind of adventures that stay with you for a lifetime. Over time, the traditional path becomes the default. Stepping outside of it starts to feel risky, unrealistic, or even irresponsible. Before long, the idea of doing something different—like sailing around the world—gets pushed further and further into the background. Not because the desire isn’t there, but because it’s easier to keep moving forward on the path that’s already in front of you than it is to step off and figure out something entirely different. It’s calm anchorages, clear water, quiet sunsets, and the freedom to go wherever and whenever you want. Those moments absolutely exist and frequently happen. But what often gets overlooked is everything that needs to be learned to accomplish this vision. A lot of people assume that if they can just get the right boat, the right gear, and enough money, they can figure the rest out along the way. But the reality is, many don’t yet have the experience to even know what the “right” boat or equipment actually is.
